Thomas Company, Inc. was established in 1920 by George
J. Thomas, at his home and office located at 2835 Arctic Avenue in Atlantic
City. At that time the Company provided roofing, built-up roofing, slate,
tile, asbestos, and asphalt shingles to the residential and commercial
sectors of Atlantic City and surrounding communities. Thomas Company also
provided custom formed sheet metal work including cornices, bay windows,
metal ceilings, skylights, copings, downspouts, and gutters. Metal ceilings
were prevalent in such retail stores as Silver’s, 5 & 10, Ames
Stores, and Woolworth’s, and other prominent retail facilities in
and around Atlantic City at that time.

In the 1930’s George J. Thomas branched out into
asbestos/brick siding using Bird Products as a franchised applicator.
In addition, he began operations to manufacture and install concrete roofing
tiles for the residential and light commercial markets. During the growing
years, Thomas Company accounts included many historical and prominent
landmarks, hotels, and real estate offices:
Steel Pier Properties, owned by George A. Hamid Sr.
Million Dollar Pier Properties
Real Estate Offices owned by such realtors as Stanley Realty, A.M. Greenfield,
and Morris Cirotta.
The Tremor Hotel, Chelsea Hotel, Shelbourne Hotel, Haddon Hall, Senator
Hotel, and the Corps of Engineers’ Facility during World War II.
Lucy the Elephant
In 1935 George J. Thomas purchased the property at 114
North Brighton Avenue in Atlantic City, where Thomas Company Inc. has
been for the past 67 years. Over the years the business continued to grow
and flourish. When the Company unexpectedly suffered the loss oft its
founder George J. Thomas, his wife Florence Thomas ran the business on
her own from the mid to late 1940’s. In 1948, their son George L.
Thomas began the responsibility of maintaining and running the company
his father had started. His commitment to quality and excellence continued
over the years. Thomas Company was involved in the completion of the first
operating hotel & casino in Atlantic City, Resorts and continues to
be involved in the expansion and/or renovation of all twelve of the casino
properties in Atlantic City.
It’s that commitment to excellence that George
L. Thomas passed on to his two sons, George J. Thomas, named after his
grandfather, and Michael G. Thomas. George J. Thomas graduated Lehigh
University in 1975 with a Bachelors of Science in Business. Upon graduation
he started full-time in the family business while at the same time going
to school to receive his Masters Degree in Business Administration, which
he earned in 1977. Michael Thomas graduated from Lehigh University in
1976 with a Bachelors of Science in Business. Upon graduation he began
to work full-time in the family business. Mike is currently a member of
the Board of Trustees, and The Board of Directors for the Roofing Contractors
Association.
Thomas Company Inc. is a family owned and operated business,
spanning over 80 years and three generations. Thomas Company, Inc. has
continued its commitment to quality and excellence in the Sheet Metal
and Roofing Industry and will continue to do so in the years to come.
